alcohol + breastfeeding

Raise your hand if you have ever been overwhelmed by all the information / “do’s”/ “don’ts” // that surround alcohol and breastfeeding, we know we have ✋✋

We have compiled a quick little list to help you if you ever want to have a cocktail and need to feed your baby //

Some breastfeeding & alcohol facts:

🍷 There is no need to pump & dump, other then for mamas own choice & comfort. Pumping & dumpling does not speed up the process of eliminating alcohol from the body & milk

🍷 Less then 2% of alcohol consumed by mama transfers to the milk

🍷 generally speaking, if you are able to drive you are able to breastfeed

🍷 Alcohol metabolizes & peaks in mamas blood 30-60 minutes after drinking (with variation with weight, food & water consumed, body fat, height & metabolism).

  Some tips:

  • Eating & drinking water while drinking helps to reduce the amount of alcohol in the blood

  • When in doubt, trust your gut & don’t breastfeed

  • Moderation is key

  • Alcohol is dehydrating so make sure you are doubling your typical water intake
